4 Skin care myths debunked

You always thought you’d learnt lots of things related to beauty and skin care through beauty blogs and fashion magazines. While you do learn lots of things, some of them can be inaccurate because of skin care myths. So read on to learn more about these myths and what actually works.

Myth no. 1: Some skin-care products work like Botox or dermal fillers.

Fact: This is not true as no product can work as Botox or dermal fillers as its ingredients cannot reach its targeted areas. In fact, even Botox can’t work if applied topically instead of it getting injected into facial muscles.

Even dermal fillers cannot plump up wrinkles if applied topically instead of injected. When professionally administered, Botox and dermal injections make wrinkles disappear and thinking skin-care products will do the same is a folly.

Myth no.2: People with sensitive skin should use hypoallergenic products.

Fact: This isn’t true as hypoallergenic is a nonsense word and only an advertisement implying a product is less likely to cause allergic reactions and is thus better for those with sensitive or problem skin.

There are no testing methods or regulations and rules determining if a product is hypoallergenic. Companies can label their products ‘hypoallergenic’ as there’s no rule saying they can’t no matter what proof is given. Thus said there are thus various products labeled ‘hypoallergenic’ with problematic ingredients which can trigger allergic reactions.

Myth no.3: Age spots just show you are growing older.

This is false as ‘age spots’ is a misnomer. The brown skin discolorations which looks like freckles is not the result of age but the result of years of unprotected sun exposure. They can show up at any time and do not need a specialty product for treatment. It however requires proven ingredients like hydroquinone and forms of vitamin C with everyday sun protection to make a noticeable and lasting difference.

Myth no.4: You will outgrow acne.

If this was true, many people would not struggle so much about skincare. This is because not everyone who suffered with acne as a teenager will soon grow out of it. Hormones can be blamed for the cause of this.

This is why men may outgrow acne as their hormone levels level out after puberty. However as women’s hormone levels fluctuate through their life, they suffer breakouts during their menstrual cycle.
