5 Skincare tips to avoid dry skin this winter– Part 1

Most people associate winter with the snow and merriment. However in addition to this, there are many people who suffer with the consequences of the cold on their skin. The seasonal changes of the temperature and the lower humidity does trigger dryness and ashiness. While those with normal, oily or combination skin find their skin getting drier, those who already have dry or sensitive skin find their skin worsening during the winter months.

All this happens because the cold winter air and harsh winters draw out the moisture from the skin. Moreover many things you do during winter to keep yourself warm contributes to this dryness.

So to help you avoid all this discomfort, here are some tips to keep your skin smooth and well hydrated through the winter season.

  1. Use gentle products which are specially formulated to use on dry skin. Choose alcohol-free products to further avoid drying out of the skin.

  1. Moisturize your skin whenever it feels dry and itchy. It’s better to use nighttime to moisturize your face and body with moisturizing butters like cocoa butter and shea. Then cover with cotton gloves and socks overnight.

  1. Take shorter showers and baths as long showers and soaking in baths strip the skin of natural oils. Not only should you also avoid hot showers and baths, you need to avoid too much of dry heat. Though putting the heater on full force in the car when it’s cold outside, it only damages your skin.

Dry skin dehydrates your skin. So to avoid dry and itchy skin, use moisturizers throughout the day, as much as needed and drink lots of water. You could also place a humidifier in the bedroom to counter-balance the heat of your heater.

  1. Remember that your diet can affect your skin. So eat healthy for warmth and include more of warm, vegetable-based soups which are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants to your diet. Include foods containing vitamins A and E to your diet, as well as Fish oil as they are all helpful for dry and irritated skin. Avoid drinking too many caffeinated drinks as it dehydrates your skin.

  1. Don’t wash your face more than once or twice a day. It’s better to clean your face at night as it’s when you have the most grime, makeup and environmental pollutants on your face to remove.

Then rinse your face with warm water in the morning and immediately apply a moisturizing face cream with sunscreen. Too much of washing only removes the protective lipid layer of the skin’s surface and dries it.
