9 More skincare tips to avoid dry skin this winter – Part 2

Now you know most of the tips you need to follow to avoid dry skin this winter through the previous post. However there are more helpful tips worth knowing. So here are these tips which should ensure your winter goes well this year, without much dry or cracked skin.

  1. Try to stay soap-free this winter. So use more of non-alkaline and soap-free cleansers on your skin as soap strips your skin of natural oils. Avoid using deodorant soaps as they are harsh and drying. Instead, use non-alkaline body washes and super fatted, unscented moisturizing bath soaps.

 

  1. Make it a point to exfoliate your skin at least once or twice a week using a gentle exfoliating cleanser or scrub. Sometimes the skin, especially black skin undergoes an abnormal exfoliation cycle where the cells create a barrier wherein the skin looks ashy and is resistant to lotions.

 

  1. However while exfoliating, make sure you do not rub the skin too hard, especially if your skin is sensitive. Instead gently massage the exfoliant using circular motions and then rinse off with warm water.

 

  1. Of course it’s warm and cozy sitting near fireplaces during winter. However try to spend as little time by the fire as possible as it only dries out your skin.

 

  1. In case you don’t have a humidifier to use in your bedroom, just place a bowl of water near the heat source to moisturize the air.

 

  1. Wool sweaters and scarves may help keep you warm. However woolen clothes and clothes made from other fabrics only rub against your skin to cause dryness. So it’s better to wear clothes made from some softer and more breathable fabrics like cotton and cashmere.

 

  1. Drinking water every day is a must. Not only does it keep you hydrated, but also removes toxins from the body and keeps your skin cells functioning properly.

 

  1. It’s not enough to just apply moisturizers and sunscreen before you go outside in the winter. In addition to this, it’s essential you apply it at least half an hour before you go outside, so that the moisturizer and sunscreen has sufficient time to get absorbed before you go outdoors.

 

If you go outdoors before the creams and lotions get absorbed, it can cause dryness as the liquid evaporates or freezes on the skin. This only leads to dry and chapped skin.

 

  1. Not only should you protect your body, but your lips too. Just wear a moisturizing lipstick or a lip balm with SPF before you go outdoors.

Last, but not least, some skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema worsens during winter. So consult your dermatologist for help and suggestions on taking care of your skin during winter months.
